Harbor East hatches

NANDO'S PERi-PERi HATCHES IN HARBOR EAST South African-Portuguese Flame-Grilled Chicken Spices Up Second Baltimore Location Nando's PERi-PERi, the South African-Portuguese restaurant known worldwide for its succulent flame-grilled chicken, is hatching its newest location today in the booming Harbor East neighborhood of Baltimore. Next door to the new Hyatt Place hotel at the corner of South Central and Fleet Streets, the 122-seat restaurant will be Nando's second downtown Baltimore location. 'Ever since we opened in Baltimore in 2013, Nando's fans have been incredibly supportive,' said Burton Heiss, CEO of Nando's PERi-PERi USA. 'Harbor East provides us with the perfect opportunity to share our fiery PERi-PERi flavors with an even greater Charm City audience.' The design of every Nando's restaurant is completely unique, and Harbor East in no exception. The restaurant features a delicate wooden ceiling that resembles a handwoven basket, and textiles and handmade furniture that honor Nando's South African roots. Other elements include reclaimed barn wood and an elegant communal table made of concrete with a center inlay of hickory. Like all Nando's, the restaurant also showcases original contemporary South African artwork. Harbor East is a former warehouse district nestled between Little Italy and the Inner Harbor. Before the 20-acre neighborhood was 'rediscovered' in the 1990s, one local newspaper described it as a 'checkerboard of parking lots and industrial plots.' Today, Harbor East is one of the city's most upscale haunts, with chic shopping and a vibrant nightlife. For Nando's, Harbor East marks the sixth location in Greater Baltimore. There's the original restaurant at 421 West Baltimore Street plus locations in Towson, Arundel Mills, Laurel and Waugh Chapel. 'Baltimore fans clearly get us and love our spicy PERi-PERi chili seasoning,' Heiss said. 'We hope to keep expanding in and around Baltimore as our fan base grows.' About Nando's PERi-PERi The first Nando's restaurant opened its doors in 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Since then, the Nando's flame has spread to 23 countries on five continents. Nando's is known worldwide for its succulent PERi-PERi chicken, marinated for 24 hours, flame-grilled to perfection, and basted to the customer's preferred flavor and spice. It's equally renowned for its spicy PERi-PERi, the Bird's Eye chili pepper that indigenous Africans introduced to the Portuguese centuries ago. Nando's PERi-PERi made its U.S. debut in 2008 with the opening of its first location on 7th Street in the Chinatown neighborhood in Washington, DC. Nando's PERi-PERi now operates 21 restaurants in and around the Washington area including Chinatown, Dupont Circle, The Yards and Tenleytown in DC; Bethesda, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, National Harbor, Annapolis, Baltimore, Towson, Waugh Chapel, Arundel Mills and Laurel in Maryland; and Springfield, Pentagon Row, Gainesville, Ashburn, Woodbridge and Old Town, Alexandria, in Virginia. In 2015, it will open three new restaurants in Chicago, in the West Loop, Lakeview and Lincoln Park neighborhoods.
