Have we had enough fried chicken yet, Chicago? Are we prepared to move onto a bird with a bit more kick? Meet PERi-PERi chicken, an African specialty made by marinating chicken in a chiles and lemon and the throwing it on a flaming grill. Nando’s, a South African restaurant group, has been transporting the dish around the globe with its chain of fast-casual establishments that serve varying levels of spicy chicken as well as sandwiches, salads and sides such as Portuguese rice.
Since its inception in 1987, South African chain Nando’s has expanded to 1,200 locations on five continents including 20 U.S. locations in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. To continue its westward expansion, three new Nando’s will come to Chicago bringing the fiery chicken along with sandwiches, salads and sides like Portuguese rice. The first location will open in the West Loop at 953 W. Randolph St. this spring, according to the Chicago Tribune. Two more locations are planned for Lincoln Park and Lakeview later next year.
