When one of Africa's greatest brands links up with a living African legend that personifies the spirit and passion of that brand, the birth of a life changing initiative is inevitable.
Yes, the partnership between Kingsley Holgate, legendary adventurer and the greybeard of modern African exploration and Nando's is indeed set to lead us into one of our most exciting journeys ever. And everyone imbued with this spirit can be part of the Great Peri-Peri Adventure to follow the mysterious trail of our magical ingredient Peri-Peri made from one of Africa's proudest secrets, The African Bird's Eye Chilli and to assist Kingsley in a quest to save thousands of lives.
We believe that Kingsley Holgate stands for a great cause and that he lives the philosophy of the Nando's brand which is all about touching and changing people's lives. With our support Kingsley will be distributing thousands of insecticide-treated anti-malaria nets, malaria prevention information leaflets, books and reading glasses throughout Africa.
Peri-Peri is the lifeblood of Nando's. It's the source of our passion, the reason we love what we do. And because it is a passion that lies at the heart of the Nando's brand, we are committed to get to know everything there is to know about this magical ingredient. Not just for ourselves... It occurred to us that Nando's fans who undoubtedly have a healthy addiction to Nando's, may share this Peri-Peri passion......
And that's where Kingsley Holgate comes in. Over a period of 365 days, travelling around the Outside Edge of Africa and distributing malaria nets, he will also unearth the fascinating folklore, anecdotes and cooking expertise which exist around the African Bird's Eye Chilli and uncover those secret and treasured Peri-Peri recipes unique to specific regions, countries, tribes and villages throughout Africa. | About 90% of the world’s malaria deaths are estimated to occur in sub-Saharan Africa >> |
| The majority of these deaths occur among children under five years of age and pregnant women. The clinical disease burden is especially high among these two groups as a result of immature and weakened immunity respectively. Malaria is also a major cause of anaemia in children and pregnant women, low birth weight, premature birth and infant mortality. |

| The World Health Organisation views malaria and HIV as two of the most devastating global health problems of our time >> |
| Jointly, they cause more than 4 million deaths a year. Both are diseases of poverty, and both are causes of poverty. To a considerable extent, both are concentrated in the same geographical regions. The resulting co-infection and interaction between the two diseases have major public health implications. Its 2005 World Malaria Report estimates that between 350–500 million clinical malaria episodes occur annually; most of these caused by infection with P. falciparum and P. vivax. |

| Insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets. A simple, life-saving solution for malaria in Africa>> |
| One of the main focuses of Roll Back Malaria (RBM), the global partnership initiated by WHO, UNDP, UNICEF and the World Bank to combat malaria, is the promotion and provision of insecticide-treated mosquito nets in conjunction with interventions, such as prompt access to effective treatment, promotion of and improved vector-control, prevention and management of malaria in complex emergencies, as well as containing malaria epidemics. |
| Most malaria-carrying mosquitoes bite at night. Mosquito nets, if properly used and maintained, can provide a physical barrier to hungry mosquitoes >> |
| If treated with insecticide, the effectiveness of nets is greatly improved, generating a chemical halo that extends beyond the mosquito net itself. This tends to repel or deter mosquitoes from biting, or shorten the mosquito’s life span so that it cannot transmit malaria infection.Trials of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in the 1980s and 1990s showed that ITNs reduced deaths in young children by an average of 20%. (Source: RBM website - RBM Info sheet) The Roll Back Malaria global partnership promotes the use of ITNs for everyone at risk of malaria, especially children and pregnant women. |

| His adventures include son Ross and wife Gillian. The family's first epic journey, from Cape to Cairo, was completed in 1993 in open inflatable boats and back-up four wheel drive vehicles. They followed the footsteps of Livingstone and Stanley down the Zambezi and Congo Rivers and circumnavigated the Lake Turkana, the world's largest desert lake. This trip was registered with the Royal Geographical Society as a World First. |
But Kingsley Holgate is not just an explorer, he is also an African (the Zulus call him "Nondwayisa uya Shinga" - the African Lilly Trotter - a water bird that stalks the rivers of Africa on long legs) and a passionate humanitarian. During his last two adventures he also distributed tens of thousands of mosquito nets to pregnant mums and children as part of an ongoing Malaria Prevention Campaign called One Net One Life! |
As he rightly says, "My life has been one incredible adventure and if I can save lives through this adventure and at the same time document the authentic secrets and heritage of PERi-PERi throughout Africa, I would have fulfilled my vision of life - Saving lives through adventure!"
